 John Morton Carter was born in 1848. He married in 1868 and in that same year established John M. Carter Ltd (often referred to simply as “Carters”) in the heart of the farming community in Kingsclere, Hampshire. The company produced rope, horse tack, nose bags and reins.
To supplement the Kingsclere site, premises in Wote Street, Basingstoke, were added in 1904. At this time, Carters began to hire tents and wooden furniture, sowing the seeds for what was to become the mainstay of Carters’ business.
John Morton Carter's grandson, Alec, joined the company in the 1920s, when the company possessed only two 60x30ft marquees.
In the 1960s the company moved to new (and current) premises in Winchester Road, Basingstoke, where manufacturing evolved to include the production of PVC and canvas goods. A small retail outlet was also opened, stocking camping items, sheets, gas and other supplies.

 The company remains, to this day, a family-owned and run business, headed by Peter Hallows, John Morton Carter's great-great grandson. The Winchester Road premises now extend to over 30,000sq.ft, housing our extensive marquee, furniture and ancillary stock, as well as our manufacturing operations.
Our workforce numbers more than 50, some of whom have given loyal service to the company and its customers for over 40 years and who are themselves passing on their knowledge and experience to the next generation of dedicated employees.
Our fleet of around 20 vehicles, resplendent in their British racing green livery, is recognised across the south of England.
Although still based in Basingstoke in Hampshire, our scope extends across the south of England, from Kent to Somerset & Avon and from Oxfordshire to the Isle of Wight. We have also undertaken projects further afield, including across the Channel.
